Aperture Science is founded by Cave Johnson in 1953 as a shower curtain manufacturer. The company is a success and is soon given the opportunity to produce shower curtains for the military (with the exception of the Navy).
Nearly 30 years after the creation of Aperture Science, Cave Johnson is fatally poisoned by mercury during a secret shower curtain experiment. However, before his death, Cave's final request for the company was a three tiered plan. First would be the Heimlich Counter-Maneuver, a maneuver designed specifically to prevent a choking victim from not chocking to death. Second would be the Take-A-Wish Foundation, a charity providing wishes for healthy adults by purchasing them from parents of ill children. Third would be a "rip in the fabric of space", for use with shower curtains. The three tier plan appears to be a failure and garners the attention of a US Senate investigative committee. However during the Senate committee meeting, Aperture is able to convince them to back both the first and third tier. The Take-A-Wish Foundation remains a failure.
Aperture Science then begins to focus more on actual scientific endeavors and on gaining government contracts. The company makes advancements in it's third tier "Portal" technology as well as starts designing a Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System. Aperture also develops the Borealis ship.
